Food for Thought, International Development

“Orange soda is not a substitute for breast milk?”

Another blogger  Tattoed Missionary made an excellent connection between development work and “30 Rock,” the NBC sitcom.

In a year 1 episode, Type A boss Jack Donaghy butts his way into Tracy’s community service project; a little league team in the worst part of NYC. Jack is sure that a championship is what the kids need to lift them out of poverty and the boys’ aspirations to be “able to clean an office like this!” Amid the snazzy unis and Jack’s bomber-style coach’s jacket, street-wise Tracy protests that it was a “win” that they were even playing outside.

If you can get past the not-to-veiled references to the Iraq War, the utter failure of Jack’s little league project can be a huge lesson for those working in development, whether domestic or international.

The enduring success of your “project” is no way related, and may be inversely proportional, to the righteous zeal you feel.

Accomplished!

Accomplished!
